Since 1840, Columbia has devoted its first week of April to the mule which played such an instrumental role in the settlement of their community. The annual Mule Day Parade attracts over two hundred thousand spectators from throughout the United States and abroad and serves as one of the largest livestock markets in the world.
Columbia is the ancestral home of the eleventh president of the United States, James K. Polk. The Polk home is located just two blocks from the center of town.
