Sam Houston: The Volunteer Exile

Forever linked to Texas history an best known for his famous battle cry, "Remember the Alamo," Sam Houston began his colorful career in Tennessee.

The Nashville Public Television documentary, Sam Houston: The Volunteer Exile examines one of the most colorful and controversial characters in Tennessee history. Before Houston shouted his famous battle cry, "Remember the Alamo," he was the Tennessee Governor who walked away from everything at the moment he was poised for the center stage of national politics—potentially, the presidency.

This half-hour program chronicles Houston's life in the Volunteer state—from the time he lived with the Cherokee Indians to the times he became a military hero, Andrew Jackson's protégé, and a powerful political figure. Through archival images, originally shot scenes of historic landmarks, and interviews with historians and family, Sam Houston: The Volunteer Exile tells the story of a Tennessean whose winding path led him to glory.
