NASHVILLE, Tennessee – September 30, 2009 -- Nashville Public Television (NPT) will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month 2009 (September 15-October 15) with several special broadcasts – including the two-part, four-hour LATIN MUSIC, USA – and a partnership with the Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce to host the Chamber’s 5th Annual NAHCC Business Awards and Health Assist Tennessee’s Salón de Cultura Reception at the station’s studio.

LATIN MUSIC, USA, a documentary series celebrating the Latin rhythms at the heart of jazz, rock, country and R&B, that in turn highlights the great American music created by Latinos, will air on Mondays, October 12 and 19, 8:00-10:00 p.m. CT on NPT. Narrated by acclaimed Golden Globe and Emmy-award winning actor Jimmy Smits and featuring the stories of Latino artists Celia Cruz, Carlos Santana, the Fania All-Stars, Shakira, Gloria Estefan and Ricky Martin, along with exclusive interviews and never-before-seen footage, the documentary aims to reach lovers of music everywhere, along with fans of American history and everyone who loves to dance.

The 5th Annual NAHCC Business Awards and Salon de Cultura Reception will take place Wednesday, October 7, 2009 at NPT, 161 Rains Avenue, Nashville. The event will include a clip from LATIN MUSIC, USA, discussions, awards and a scheduled proclamation by Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. The event is open to members of the chamber and invited guests. “National Hispanic Heritage Month provides a wonderful opportunity for NPT to celebrate and appreciate Nashville’s rich Hispanic history, cultural traditions, and lasting influence in our community,” said Kathy Edson, outreach coordinator, NPT.

"Nashville and Tennessee's future economic and cultural strength will be shaped by our emergent Hispanic community,” said Yuri Cunza, president and CEO, Nashville Area Hispanic Chamber of Commerce . “We are growing, and the more we grow as businesses, individuals and as members of this community, the more we will give back. This trend continues, as shown on recently released information by the U.S Census.

“During Hispanic Heritage Month, we must not only celebrate, but also allow ourselves the opportunity to learn more about the importance and influence of the Hispanic community on our city, state and nation. Having a non-profit organization such as NPT as our community partner will help us reach a broader audience. One more bridge built for the common good”

In addition to LATIN MUSIC, USA, additional programming scheduled to air on NPT celebrating Hispanic culture and achievement includes the series VOCES (http://www.voces.tv ), airing on Tuesday nights in October at 11:00 p.m., and IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE: “FIESTA LATINA,” in which the President and First Lady welcome Latin artists, on Thursday, October 15 at 9:00 p.m.
