Live from Schermerhorn Symphony Center Nashville Symphony Maestro Giancarlo Guerrero Goes ONE ON ONE with John Seigenthaler NASHVILLE, Tennessee – August 21, 2008 – Nashville Public Television (NPT) will bring the opening night performance of the Nashville Symphony’s 2008/09 season to all of Middle Tennessee – live and in HD – when it broadcasts GERSHWIN AT ONE SYMPHONY PLACE on Saturday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. Coming to viewers directly from Schermerhorn Symphony Center’s Laura Turner Concert Hall in downtown Nashville, Music Director Designate Giancarlo Guerrero, in his new leadership role with the orchestra, will conduct the First Tennessee All-Gershwin Gala.
Viewers will have an opportunity to get to know Guerrero in advance of the gala performance when he appears on ONE ON ONE WITH JOHN SEIGENTHALER Sunday, August 31 at 9:30 p.m. The half-hour interview will be repeated at 10 p.m. September 6 following the live broadcast. A five-minute preview clip is available at youtube.com/wnptvideos .
GERSHWIN AT ONE SYMPHONY PLACE, a production of Sunrise Entertainment and the Nashville Symphony, will also be distributed to PBS stations nationwide later this year. The special reunites the team that won a MidSouth Regional Emmy® Award for One Symphony Place: A World Premiere Live from Music City, the broadcast of the grand opening of Schermerhorn Symphony Center in September 2006.
“Our original broadcast of Schermerhorn Symphony Center’s opening night in 2006, and subsequent national broadcast, was a triumphant moment for NPT, the Nashville Symphony and Sunrise Entertainment. Ultimately, it was a shining moment for Nashville,” said Beth Curley, President and CEO of Nashville Public Television. “We’re proud to continue sharing that excitement, and the extraordinary art of the Symphony, with Middle Tennessee and the nation.” Giancarlo Guerrero and John Seigenthaler At the First Tennessee All-Gershwin Gala, Guerrero will be joined by guest pianist Kevin Cole for Rhapsody in Blue, one of George Gershwin’s best-loved and most recognizable works. Rounding out the all-Gershwin program are An American in Paris, Cuban Overture and Concerto in F major for Piano and Orchestra. The latter also features Cole, who is considered one of the world’s most accomplished interpreters of the Gershwin repertoire. Celebrated for his fusion of jazz and classical music, Gershwin was a high school dropout who, by the time he was 30, had become America’s most famous composer. Gershwin’s untimely death from a brain tumor in 1937 at age 38 robbed the world of one of its most innovative and successful artists.
