Nashville Public Library and NPT Partner on PBS Kids® Raising Readers Library Corner Edmondson Pike Branch “Corner” gives children and parents the opportunity to strengthen literacy skills through fun, engaging multi-media platforms NASHVILLE, TN – June 29, 2009 – Nashville Public Television (NPT) and PBS KIDS Raising Readers, together with the Nashville Public Library, are upping the ante in their mission to help kids in Nashville learn to read by offering fun, free reading activities all summer long at the Edmondson Pike Branch. The NPT PBS Kids Raising Readers Library Corner at the Edmondson Pike Branch will be open during Library hours, and will be officially opened on Tuesday, July 7 at 9:30 a.m. when children from Paragon Mills Elementary School, along with parents, teachers and caregivers, will be introduced to the “Corner” and its many materials featuring their favorite PBS Kids characters, with books, board games, computer games and DVD clips. There will also be regular reading volunteers reading to the children, a storyteller and a visit from the JACK FM Ice Cream Truck to keep everyone cool outside. All children will receive credit towards their NPL summer reading program goal. About PBS Kids Raising Readers PBS KIDS Raising Readers is a national literacy campaign focused on building reading skills at home, at school, in child care and in the community. PBS KIDS Raising Readers, funded by a Ready To Learn grant from the United States Department of Education, develops engaging PBS KIDS programs as well as exciting games, playful Web sites, and easy-to-use learning resources for kids, parents, caregivers, and teachers—all with the goal of helping children ages 2 - 8 build the skills they need to learn to read, with a focus on the needs of children from low-income families. All content is built incorporating the latest research about the most effective ways to use media to help kids learn to read. |
